En esta investigación hemos pretendido describir el acogimiento familiar de menores en familia extensa como alternativa de convivencia en aquellos casos en que los padres no pueden o dejan de ejercer su rol de cuidadores principales de sus hijos. El impacto de esta situación familiar en los abuelos demanda una especial atención, por la problemática asociada a la reconversión de roles, desde abuelos a “padres sustitutos”. La prevención de la aparición de consecuencias negativas (burnout, sintomatología depresiva, pérdida de relaciones sociales, problemas económicos, problemas de escolarización, etc.) junto con la promoción de consecuencias positivas (relación con los nietos, etc.) será objeto de análisis en nuestro trabajo. Es importante detectar las necesidades de apoyo psicosocial –además de otras formas de apoyo como el instrumental- y redes formales e informales para el diseño de adecuadas formas de intervención desde las instituciones y los agentes sociales.
