Abstract:

The goal of this paper is to account for the distribution of infinitives and gerunds in Spanish by proposing that they have inflectional features subject to parametric variation; for this reason the syntactic positions that infinitives and gerunds can occupy are different between languages. In order to justify my hypothesis, I will study the problems that English students must face when they are learning Spanish as a second language. I will demonstrate that infinitives in Spanish and gerunds in English have the same features.
