Abstract:
Although care work has historically been excluded from the realm of public intervention, in recent years it has gained prominence thanks to the rise of feminism within institutions and the promotion of public policies aimed at addressing the gender inequalities that shape its provision. This article analyses how the implementation of public childcare policies can contribute to the recognition and redistribution of care work. Based on a case study of the Temps x Cures program, launched in Catalonia in 2021, the study evaluates its implementation through a qualitative methodological strategy, triangulated with quantitative data. The analysis is framed within Nancy Fraser’s (2015) theory of feminist justice and provides empirical evidence on how such policies can contribute to recognizing the value of care through institutionalization and to defamiliarizing its provision. However, it is crucial that they are driven by autonomous units with authority, resources, and clear guidelines in order to mainstream a gender perspective and reverse the labour precariousness in the sector.
