Abstract

The Venezuelan Pavilion was one of Gordon Bunshaft's first projects for Skidmore & Owings. It was a large showcase, an airy place, a rectangle with glass walls. The exhibition was ordered between the glass perimeter and the plane on which the map of Venezuelan geography was placed. The exhibition accompanied the passage to the restaurant terrace and the tropical garden. With the success of the setup, the author architect and his team recognized the need to keep the influence of this approach in the shops and lobbies of their future buildings. For this reason, it was sought to deepen on how glazed planes improve both the internal space and the surrounding environment. Attempts have been made to reveal what Bunshaft pursues by exploring the attributes of glass sheets in his projects and reflecting on the “visual display” involved in the role of glass curtains “in and from” the pavilion. The study showed that to take heed of what is known “will be visible,” has brought a renewed perspective on the opportunities offered by the use of glass in architecture.

Andrea Parga, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

Doctora Arquitecta en Proyectos Arquitectónicos por la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya con la tesis ‘Edificios que hacen ciudad. La arquitectura de Gordon Bunshaft para la gran manzana. 1947-1967’, con mención internacional. Es miembro del Grupo de investigación Form+ de la Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona de l’Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Ha sido investigadora postdoctoral MINECO, en el Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos de la Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (2018-2019) e investigadora en formación FPI-MEC en el Grupo FORM+, Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos de la Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (2015-2018). Ha realizado estancias de investigación en centros del Caribe. Ha recibido ayuda del Ministerio de economía y competitividad para tres meses de estancia de investigación en el GSAPP, Columbia University, bajo la tutela de Kenneth Frampton en 2016. Ha realizado estudios en el International Center of Photography, ICP, NYC, 2016. Obtuvo el Máster en “Teoría y Práctica del Proyecto de Arquitectura” en 2011 y máster en “Historia, Arte, Arquitectura y Ciudad” en 2001. Ha sido colaboradora docente del Departamento de Composición Arquitectónica con Ignasi de Solà-Morales (2000-2001). Ha sido profesora de Diseño Arquitectónico en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (1999-2000). Recibió la beca ‘egresado-exterior’ del Consejo de Desarrollo Científico y Humanístico de la Universidad Central de Venezuela para realizar estudios de máster en la Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona. Combina su labor investigadora y docente con el ejercicio profesional, conjuntamente con otros equipos. Ha sido invitada a participar en el concurso privado de ideas para el proyecto arquitectónico de la sede de “La Cinemateca Nacional de Venezuela”; propuesta exhibida en la Galería de Arte Nacional de Caracas, 2000. Ha sido merecedora del PREMIO AXIS a la Excelencia en Diseño en dos ocasiones: en reconocimiento como profesora de proyectos arquitectónicos, 2000; y como Premio Único. Categoría II - Diseño Arquitectónico IV-VI, con el proyecto para la Sede de los Institutos FAU-UCV, 1996.
