Rural areas of Andalusia facing economic downturn: Analyzing territorial resilience factors

Pedro Sánchez Zamora, Rosa Gallardo Cobos, Felisa Ceña Delgado

Abstract

This paper aims to identify, in the current context of economic downturn, the factors associated with territorial resilience in rural areas of Andalusia. In order to do so, we have designed a methodology that, applied in two time periods (2000-2008 and 2008-2012), identifies territories that have undergone resilient processes of change using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The selected approach determines the influence that a wide range of territorial factors have on the aforementioned resilience. The result obtained could provide useful information for the design of policies allowing rural territories to respond more favorably to economic pressures.
